No, this strange sea creature is not a Pokémon! It's actually Glaucus atlanticus, more commonly known as the blue dragon or blue angel. This colorful, three-centimeter-long marine sea slug relies on two unique adaptations to survive. Glaucus atlanticus is immune to the stinging nematocysts of certain siphonophores (including those of the dreaded Portuguese man o' war). It collects these nematocysts and stores them, keeping them in "cnidosacs" which are located at the tip of its cerata, the thin, finger-like protrusions along its side. Touching one of these can result in a painful sting with symptoms similar to those caused by the assimilated siphonophore toxins. This unique defense against predation ensures the slug's safety. Glaucus atlanticus floats upside-down along the surface of the water, using a gas-filled sac in its stomach and surface tension in order to maintain this orientation.
